In Alberta there is a legal ban on pruning elm trees during the high-risk season, generally April 1 to September 30.
The ban exists because fresh pruning cuts in the warm months attract the beetles that spread Dutch elm disease. That means elms should only be pruned in late autumn and winter, outside the ban. Elm wood also has to be disposed of properly and never stored, since beetles breed in it. We prune elms only in the legal window and handle the wood correctly.
