What Dutch elm disease is and why it matters

Dutch elm disease is a deadly fungal disease that clogs an elm's water system and can kill a mature tree in a single season. It is spread by elm bark beetles and by root grafts between neighbouring elms.

Alberta has worked hard to stay largely free of the disease, which is why the province enforces strict rules, including a ban on pruning elms in the warmer months when beetles are active. Protecting Edmonton's elm canopy depends on everyone following them.

Know The Signs

Signs of Dutch elm disease

Wilting leaves

Leaves that yellow, wilt and curl in summer, often on one branch first.

Flagging branches

Whole branches of brown, dead leaves while the rest stays green.

Brown streaking

Brown staining in the wood under the bark of affected branches.

Rapid decline

A healthy-looking elm can go downhill within weeks.

Beetle activity

Small holes and galleries left by elm bark beetles.

Whole-tree death

Untreated, the disease usually kills the tree.

Alberta Rules

The elm pruning ban and what to do

Alberta bans elm pruning from April 1 to September 30 to keep beetles away from fresh cuts.

Because the beetles that spread Dutch elm disease are drawn to fresh pruning cuts in warm weather, elms may only be pruned in late autumn and winter. Keeping elms healthy, pruned in the legal window, and disposing of elm wood properly is the best defence. If you suspect the disease, do not prune in summer. Contact us or the City, and we can assess the tree and plan action. See our elm pruning service.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my elm has Dutch elm disease?
Look for leaves that suddenly wilt, yellow and brown in summer, often starting on one branch, with brown streaking in the wood underneath. If you see this, do not prune in summer and get it assessed.
Can Dutch elm disease be treated?
Caught very early, some elms can be treated by an arborist, but there is no guaranteed cure. Prevention through proper pruning timing, wood disposal and healthy trees is the real defence.
Why can't I prune my elm in summer?
Fresh cuts attract the elm bark beetles that spread the disease. Alberta law bans elm pruning from April 1 to September 30 for this reason.
What should I do with elm wood?
Never store or keep elm firewood, as beetles breed in it. Elm wood must be disposed of properly. We handle this as part of any elm work.
