Elms need special care and correct timing in Alberta. We prune elm trees across Edmonton by the rules, keeping them healthy and helping protect them from Dutch elm disease.
Elms are among Edmonton's most valuable street and yard trees, and they need careful, correctly-timed pruning. Good pruning keeps an elm strong and open, and removes deadwood before it becomes a problem.
Timing is not optional with elms. Alberta law bans elm pruning during the warmer months to protect against Dutch elm disease, which is spread by beetles attracted to fresh cuts. We prune elms only in the legal window and dispose of the wood properly.

In Alberta there is a legal ban on pruning elm trees during the high-risk season, generally April 1 to September 30.
The ban exists because fresh pruning cuts in the warm months attract the beetles that spread Dutch elm disease. That means elms should only be pruned in late autumn and winter, outside the ban. Elm wood also has to be disposed of properly and never stored, since beetles breed in it. We prune elms only in the legal window and handle the wood correctly. If you have an elm that looks unwell in summer, we can still assess it and plan the work for when pruning is allowed. Learn more in our guide to Dutch elm disease.
